Eurovision Song Contest 2021: video intervista ai Blind Channel, in gara per la Finlandia all’ESC2021

Con i Blind Channel, unici rappresentanti rock insieme ai Maneskin, in questo Eurovision Song Contest 2021, diamo il via alle interviste esclusive realizzate per gli speciali della “Hit Chart Top 20: Open Up”.

In attesa di seguire in diretta su Radio Music Evolution, martedì 18, giovedì 20 e sabato 22, dalle 20.30 gli speciali dedicati a ESC2021, Matolas & Claudia hanno incontrato i Blind Channel in gara con il brano “Dark side”.

Ecco quello che ci hanno raccontato (dopo il video, anche la versione in inglese):

“Diamo il benvenuto a Niko e Joel dei Blind Channel! Voi sarete i rappresentanti della Finlandia quest’anno; cosa vi aspettate dalla vostra partecipazione?”

Niko: Non vediamo davvero l’ora! Siamo stati in quarantena, qui in Finlandia per almeno due settimane e ora non stiamo più nella pelle di prendere un aereo per arrivare nel posto in cui faremo una grande festa e potremo finalmente suonare in uno show live.

“Parliamo ora del vostro brano “Dark side”: avete detto che è stato pensato come inno per questo momento orribile nel quale ci siamo trovati tutti. Un inno per dire “è ok anche sentirsi uno schifo”, vero?” 

Niko: Assolutamente sì! Va benissimo sentirsi uno schifo e non bisogna avere paura di mostrarlo! “Dark side” è stato pensato per far provare alle persone un po’ di sollievo e farle bere un po’ di ‘Blind Channel‘ se si sentono male, diverse o strane, o qualsiasi cosa non le faccia sentire a loro agio è giusto mostrare il ‘lato oscuro’. Sono tutti invitati: alzate il dito medio e urliamo tutti quanti insieme! Questo è il messaggio. 

“Nel 2016 avete aperto i concerti dei Simple Plan. Che ricordo avete di quell’esperienza e com’è stato lavorare con i Simple Plan?”

Joel: E’ stato cinque anni fa ormai, ed è passato davvero tanto tempo, ma è stato il nostro primo show con una rock band internazionale al di fuori della Finlandia. In un certo senso è stato come perdere la verginità, suonando su un palco immenso per aprire lo show di una grandissima band!

“Sul vostro canale YouTube è presento il vostro personale tributo a Chester Bennington dei Linkin Park, con la vostra cover di “Numb”. Cosa ha rappresentato Chester per voi, come artista?” 

Niko: I Blind Channel non sarebbero qui senza i Linkin Park! Sono stati la nostra maggiore fonte di ispirazione per noi, per tutti noi. Hanno avuto una grande influenza sul nostro percorso: non ci saremmo nemmeno conosciuti. I Linkin Park sono stati dei veri pioneri nella musica creando qualcosa di nuovo e unico. Hanno mixato la musica mainstream con il rock e il rap ed è quello che stiamo cercando anche noi di riproporre con il nostro progetto. Chester è stato uno dei nostri idoli più grandi, una vera leggenda. Sono stati dei giorni difficilissimi e molto duri quando apprendemmo della sua scomparsa. Ho voluto personalmente dedicare un omaggio a questo straordinario artista. 

“Voi e i Maneskin, che rappresentano l’Italia, siete gli unici due rappresentanti del rock all’Eurovision. Pensate che qualcosa nell’industria musicale mondiale possa cambiare da quest’anno?” 

Joel: E’ veramente molto bello che ci sia un’altra rock band con noi e mi piace moltissimo il loro brano. Ci fa piacere ci siano anche i Maneskin all’Eurovision Song Contest. Credo possa essere una cosa positiva per la musica rock in generale: ultimamente se ci pensate la musica pop è quasi fondamentalmente appannaggio del rap e dell’elettronica e dance music; quindi è sicuramente una ventata di freschezza che in una competizione così famosa ci siano due rock band in gara. Sono contento che ci siano anche i Maneskin a darci una mano a riportare il rock in auge! 

Niko: Sì, esattamente! La nostra missione principale è quella di riportare la musica rock su un palco importante e prestigioso come l’ESC ed è bellissimo vedere una grande band come i Maneskin che sta facendo questo con noi. 

“E ora prima di salutarci è il vostro momento dell’APPELLO PER FARVI VOTARE: dite quello che volete per avere voti da tutta Europa!” 

Niko: Italia e tutta Europa, unitevi al lato oscuro; divertiamoci insieme, bevendo un po’ di ‘Blind Channel’ e alzando il terzo dito da casa, perché noi sul palco di Rotterdam non potremmo farlo, ma voi sì! Alziamo questo terzo dito e spacchiamo tutto insieme! 

 

“Please welcome Niko & Joel, from Blind Channel! So guys, you will represent Finland in ESC 2021, what do you expect from this participation?”

Niko: We can’t wait to! We’ve been in quarantine here in Finland for almost 2 weeks, we can’t wait to get on a plane and get to the place where party happens and play the show!

“Let’s talk about your song “Dark side”: you’ve said that could be thought as anthem for this mess we find ourselves in. It’s ok even to feel like shit, right?”

Niko: Yeah of course! It is ok to feel bad and to show it! “Dark side” was meant for people to experience some relieve like show the dark side drink some ‘Blind Channel’ if you feel bad, if you feel like an outsider or a freak, whatever makes you feel bad, show the dark side. Everybody is invited, throw the middle finger up and let’s scream through this together; that’s the point!

“You were the opening act for the Simple Plan’s tour in 2016. How was that experience and how was to work with them?”

Joel: It has been 5 years, so it was long time ago but it was the first show that we have with international rock band outside of Finland so it was like kind of losing the virginity of playing a huge supporting shows for big bands.

“In your YouTube channel there is your own version of “Numb” a special tribute to Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. What did Chester represent for you as an artist?”

Niko: Blind Channel would not be here without Linkin Park! Linking Park was the biggest influence, the biggest inspiration for us, for all of us! We didn’t even know each other, Linkin Park brought us together and we love the fact that they were truly pioneers, creating something new: like mixing mainstream music with rock music and rap music, and that is what we are trying to do in the year 2021. Chester was one of our biggest idols and truly a legend. It was a real rough day and a rough time when Chester passed away. I wanted to pay a tribute for that great idol.

“You and the Maneskin, for Italy, are the only two representing the rock vibes in this Eurovision Song Contest. Do you think something could change form this year in the rock music universe worldwide?” 

Joel: It is really great that there is another rock band I really love the song and appreciate them for taking part in Eurovision. I think this would be a great thing for rock music in general. If you think about it pop music is pretty much rap music and some electronic dance music, so it is really fresh to see that there is some rock band in mainstream competition such as Eurovision and I really love that Maneskin are with us on the mission to bring rock back

Niko: Yeah our mission was to bring rock music back onto the big stages the mainstream stages and it is great to see that a great band like Maneskin are doing this with us.

“And now it’s your time to CALL TO VOTES! Say what you want in order to receive votes from all over Europe!”

Niko: Italy and the whole Europe, join the dark side let’s have a party, drink some blind channel  and put your middle finger up because we cannot do it on the stage in Rotterdam but you can! Put your middle finger up and let’s fucking do this!
